Tiles that answered render at once. A tile still loading says "Checking…" — dashed, grey, no number. Never a spinner, never a premature zero.

2 · When nothing is waiting
Every tile answered with nothing: dashed, sage, a real zero. The tiles stay — a quiet grid, not a blank page.
3 · When a corner fails to load
A tile that couldn't be reached shows "?" — cinnabar, dashed — and says what to do. It never shows 0: unreachable is unknown. Everything else stays live.
